  • What is the Ford model/part number for a replacement for starter solenoid

Thinking I would like this information just in case I'm stranded and can't find a replacement Yamaha part. Anyone know the precise Ford model number for shorter relay that will fit? Thanks.

I'm not sure of the part number but mine is from a 1990 ford F150. I use the stock relay to activate the ford relay. The way I use it, it keeps the high amperage from going thru the stock relay. Only a few amps to activate the coil of the ford relay.

So, see if I got this. The stock relay is wired as usual but instead of going to the starter those wires go to the ford relay then from the ford relay to the starter?

yes but the wires don't have to be heavy battery cables. They just have to be a heavy enough gauge to handle a few amps. I used 10 ga but only because that is what I had handy. The OEM starter relay is activated by a ground wire from the starter button. The ford relay is activated by a power wire. That is why the oem is used to activate it. If you didn't want to use the oem relay to activate the ford relay any relay activated by the starter button (ground wire) would work.

I thought there was a Ford relay that was an actual direct replacement. Maybe I was wrong?

        Ron has it correct.

You can get them with top posts, or side. Just depends where you want to mount it.

Here’s Davej’s setup. The smaller wire (red) is to the hot side of the factory relay and the other (smallest) red wire runs from the other post back to the trigger post on the Ford relay.

Im thinking the fused yellow wire is powering some accessory.

OK... I see how that would work. I was under the (erroneous) impression Ford made a relay that was interchangeable with the factory one (in case you needed one and couldn't find an OEM one immediately)

you have to do the conversion first then you are good forever.

here is the stock relay that goes with the ford relay post that Ron put up. I used a 10 gauge wire to go from the battery to the relay to make sure there was enough power availability to power the rest of the bike. I only used a smaller gauge wire to activate the Ford relay. I assume you have the Ford relay bolted to something to ground it.

yes and I have a ground wire going to the bolt that holds it down.

So is the OEM part not up to the job? Why not dlete the OEM solenoid and just use the ford solenoid for the whole job?

As davej mentioned, your using positive to the Ford solenoid and the ground is the mounting. Our bikes use ground to activate the solenoid.

You’ll still need the factory relay in place to feed all the bike’s electrics throught the 4 wire plug.
