  • Steering head bearings

    I needed to remove the bit of play, this time when i adjusted them i just twisted the 27mm deep socket as hard as possible by hand and let it go at that, i adjusted them by all kinds of methods and they always seem to get loose over time, you think i got it too loose too tight or just right doing it by hand, if i had to guess id say the pre load is somewhere between 10 and 15 lbs

    I'm thinking you are a little on the loose side for preload. I, myself, like to have it on the tight side, but moves freely. No more than these bearings move, heat isn't a factor.

      I don't think you would technically call tightening the head bearings as preload. you need to do this with the bike on a jack so the front wheel is off the ground. Torque it to specs using the special spanner adapter. Make sure you also lock the two nuts above the large nut.

      Follow the manual except they have torque value wrong.... Seat them at 37 lbs then back off and retorque to 14-15 lb/ft. The big nut on top of tree does not tighten the steering head bearings.

        Pauli, it's the large nut under the top triple tree. Not the one on top.

          I lowered the jack to the point where the front suspension just started compressing so i wouldn't be drawing up the entire weight of the front. I also know the chrome crown nut has nothing to do with bearings. Using a spanner with a torque wrench at a right angle to it would change the value, would it not? If the wrench were set to 12 I don't think the nut would set to 12 not it that configuration anyway, even loose i doubt a tank slapper could be induced on these bikes the 32 degree rake would prevent it, mine being loose developed a slight wobble decelerating at around 40, when i I first bought it i posted a picture of how shot the neck bearings were and at the time it had no wobble at all, never could figure that one out, it does handle better at slow speed after i hand rightened it and there's no more decel wobble, ill check it again over the winter.

            Some folks just tap it with a screw driver and hammer. I’m sure any MC shop would have them.

              Do you have to loosen the crown nut and the upper pinch bolts when tightening the steering nut?

                Careful. The second Pic Mort supplied has the wrong final torque value in it. 2.2 lb/ft is waaaay too low. Go 13-15.

                  Yes, because you need to pull the upper tree down tight against the head bearing nut.

                    I took riser nuts off and put the handlebars/risers on a towel over the headlight then i completely removed the top tree, had to move the tank bezel back 1/2 inch too or the top tree wouldn't clear it, the whole thing took less than an hour from start to finish.
