  • Looking at an 08. Any advice?

Hello all. How long I stay will likely depend on what happens over the next few days. I started looking for an upgrade from my Shadow Aero 750. I want sort of a jack of all trades and I was heavily leaning towards a 1300 Tourer. It really seems to be a great all around bike. Well during my quest for the perfect used 1300 I stumbled upon an 08 R* that seems like too good a deal to pass up. It's bigger than what I was really wanting but with less than 5K on the clock and the lone picture I saw looks to be in really nice shape has me thinking. Upon further inquiry I found out that it belonged to the seller's step-father who passed away in May. I asked if it has a current PA inspection but the seller is unsure and thought most likely not since he wasn't able to ride towards the end. I'm going to go look at it later this week. I'm planning to pull the battery out of my Honda to bring with me in the likely event that the battery is dead. Is there anything else I need to know or I should be looking for when I go to check it out? Thank you for your advice.

I bought an 08 with 7K. Now has 62K. Great bike, no issues with most fuelies. If you change exhaust and intake, don’t even think about trying to install an aftermarket fuel processor. The stock ecu will adjust fine. Read this entire thread. 99.9% of problems on this forum relate to carbonated Roadstars. Buy it! How much? Mine was $6800 in 2012. If seen them recently as low as $4500.

That's the direction I'm leaning. Thanks for the link. Lots to look at. In the pic I got the battery cover is off. I'm guessing it's around there somewhere. Anyhow, the asking price is a hair under $3000. I have to believe that I can't lose at that price.

Now I don't want to hear that anybody swooped in and beat me to it. Lol.

With a good charged battery that bike will start and run just fine. Depending on how long it sat the gas may need to be drained and refilled after you get it home but that is about all. Hopefully they parked it with a full tank of fuel if it sat long. A full tank of fuel when being stored for extended periods will help to prevent rust in the fuel tank. That is a great price and you will not regret the purchase. I also wouldn't wait very long to go get it at that price. Someone else might grab it before you get back. Just as long as it isn't one of the scams out there where it is at a warehouse in storage and send a gift card or wire money to Nairobe Africa for payment. LOL

Duke doesn't need another bike. Just PM me the contact info for that '08 and I'll take care of everything.

You mentioned the "battery cover" was off. The battery is under the seat and not accessible via the side covers. But at that price I'd take cash with me. In fact....let me save you the hassle. Just send me the address. I'm on my way with a trailer.

You guys are too funny. If I don't buy it I'll ask the seller if I can post it here to help her out.

Here's a peak. Looks like the battery is accessible with the side cover off. Unless she told me the wrong model.

I've seen people wrongly list other V-Star bikes as "Road Stars". I'm fairly certain that's not a Road Star but rather another of the Yamaha lineup.

Still, for under $3K it could be a decent buy/bike. But I'd want to look closer to see what it is you're actually getting.

That's an 1100 V-Star for sure. It might be a 6:50 but the cylinder angle is greater on the 1100 which it looks like. Overhead chain driven cams and you have to drop an exhaust to change the oil unless you have an oil filter relocation kit. Shaft drive. Lighter weight than a Roadstar and faster. $3,000 is not a great price.

Yeah, after I paid closer attention to the pic and compared I thought 650 or 1100 because of the round intake. I was going to see which were available with floorboards and cast wheels to narrow it down further. Bummer. Still might be a worth while upgrade from my 750 if she's willing to let it go for a good bit less.

You can easily see there are no push rod tubes, the valve covers are different (and made of plastic), angle of cylinders is more than a Roadstar or a 650, engine side cover is very different and on and on.

looks like an 1100 classic by the fenders, both 650 and 1100 had floorboards

That is for sure not a Road Star. Do yourself a big favor and find a Road Star 1600 or 1700. You won't regret it. These bikes are rock solid.

That 1100 would be an OK deal at $1500.

The only advice I can give you is to talk to Shores. I'm sure if you butter him a bit, you can get his bike for under 3K.

Now that a roadstar is on your radar...get one! I agree with the others that the pic is an 1100. Classic case of a picture worth 1000 words.

Talk to someone who owns a Honda 1300 and ask about front tire wear. I know of 2 that go through a front tire every year. I ride a lot of miles with a vtx 1300 and gas stops are always dictated by the vtx. Not bashing the bike though. 70,000 miles and running strong.

Well, I took a look at it today. It is indeed an 1100. It looked to be in decent shape. A few key points. The tank was bone dry but there was no rust at all. Last inspection was in 2014. I put some gas in it and cranked it a few times to get it circulating. Then I had to swap out the battery for the one I brought with me. It cranked and started. Idle sounded good with a little minor backfiring. The pipes that are on it are after market and it's unknown if it was jetted. The last owner is deceased and he isn't the original owner. The OEM pipes were also in the garage. The tread looks brand new but the date code makes them from 2008 so they would have to go. Now the biggest problem at least for me. I could run through the gears when it was off but when I would shift with the engine running it would jump and stall. I tried rolling it with the engine off. Rolled fine in neutral (obviously) but it wouldn't roll in gear with full clutch. I went through the full range of adjustment on the lever side but no change. That's all I had the time and inclination to try. If anyone is interested in a project I can share her cycletrader listing. (Pittsburgh area). I explained that she does not have a Road Star but rather a v star 1100 classic and also what I was able to find out. That's a hard pass for me. Lol. I'm pretty sure she'll be open to offers.
