  • Replace main carburetor diaphragm?

As many on this forum have read, I've been chasing a problem with my '07 R*. After finally being advised on settings with the Speedstar needle my bike came with, I removed the cap on top of the carb to change the clip setting on the needle. I was quite surprised when I lifted the diaphragm to find a considerable amount of what looked like rubber powder. After examining the diaphragm and seeing no obvious holes, I cleaned the cavity out by spraying carb cleaner into it. My question is: is this normal, or is it a symptom of impending failure of the aforementioned piece of rubber?

I've never ran across any rubber like your describing. Is the rubber powder on the top or bottom of the diaphragm? I can only think that it has came in from the air cleaner rubber connections or the intake manifold. Have you looked in the manifold, or the "carb to air box" connection?

They cost 27 to replace. I replaced mine when I did my carb rebuild.

The rubber was inside the carb body, under the diaphragm.I have never run across this before either.

There is a filter for the air movement on the lower side of the diaphragm. The 90 degree 1/2" tube that's at the top of the carb should have a black hose fitting looking piece that is a filter. There should be a screen inside of it and can be cleaned. I'm pretty sure that's where your getting stuff in the lower part of the diaphragm area.
Air has to move in and out of that chamber as the slide moves up and down, or your carb would be slow responding.

No, not that I'm aware of. I don't think the screen is removable, you would just clean it with solvent.

Are you referring to that 90 degree fitting that looks like it should have a hose connected to it?

Yep, that's the one! You want air to move freely in and out of it.
