Max rear tire size?

Will a 180 series tire fit on the rear without any mods? I need to order a tire tomorrow and am thinking going a little bigger. I see some talk online its no problem, but found a couple that said it may hit fender supports. What say you?

Our tire gurus say on a stock rim you don’t get any more tread on the road because the narrow rim pinches the tire. Won’t corner as well as stock or better yet, a 140 according to I think JD.

It all comes down to where your priorities lay. Do you want it to work right, work better, or look cooler? You only get to choose one of those. If you want it right, you go with the stock size. If you want better, try JD's recommendation for the 140. Less rotating mass, cheaper, allows the bike to transition better from side to side, and you only lose 1 or 2 millimeters of contact patch. Not many folks here that ride to the ability that that's gonna matter. Or you go for door # 3 and stuff a 180 in there. I have read several times on Ye Olde Clinic that some grinding may have to be done on the inner fender brace or some shit like that. Whatever you choose, it is what it is, and all that really matters is that you are happy with it.

I stuffed an HD enforcer 180mm tire on mine and when I sat on it, 165#, I thought it was pretty close to the rear fender. I did grid the subframe to make more room. I ended up taking it off and currently trying to sell the wheels and tires. I thought there wasn't enough room to have my wife on the back safely. I don't know if having a roadwing on the bike would help or not.

Don't think that I am not tempted. The subject causes so much commotion though! I think I would need to ride one with a car tire on it, or ride with someone and watch them ride a few times and see the reality of the tire. I still have a hard time thinking it would work very well with mildly aggressive cornering, and we have a LOT of bendy roads out here. Where are you located?

I use a 170 on the stock rim, a 180 on that rim is pointless.

I went with the aforementioned 140 width tire in Commander II. Best thing about it is it’s a smidge taller than stock size. Taller tire in rear typically tips in to corners better and gives more ground clearance. Albeit a very small amount. However, the Roadie needs all it can get in those departments.

I was checking for a future rear tire replacement for my 2000 R* and came across an MU85B-16 on eBay with a 20% off coupon, which I purchased and after digging into it found that the equivalent is a 140/90-16 or 140/80-16, conflicting info unfortunately..I know the stock tire is a 150/80-16, will the MU85B-16 be a suitable replacement? I also only ride solo.

Any info would be appreciated.

A 140 will likely handle better in the twisties than a 150 anyway. At least that's the case with motorcycle tires.
