  • First Long Trip Parts Order

    Hey all,

    thinking about taking my first longer trip. The longest I've done so far is about 800 miles round trip.

    Anything I should pay close attention to before I hit the road? Plan on making one more parts order before I go.

    I have recently:
    Cleaned air filter
    Changed oil and filter
    changed fork oil and rebuilt front end with new racetechs and gold valves
    fresh steering head bearings
    cleaned carb
    replaced old manifold with another ported oem manifold
    replaced front and back wheel bearings
    checked brake pads (look good)
    checked front pulley nut (nice and tight)
    adjusted the valves

    anything else I should take a peek at?

    I feel like she seems in pretty good condition after all the work I've done lately. Can't help but wonder if there's anything else I'm overlooking.

    Sounds like you've been putting the "lock down" time to good use! I want to do most of that stuff to my bike, not sure when it will get done though.

    I've heard some say to carry a spare clutch cable and rear belt before?

      The bike has been an amazing way to pass the pandemic days.

      Also wrenching on my buddies 1991 GMC Sonoma. Hoping to get it running for my little bro. Just turned 17.

    Maybe lubricate the cables but you have done pretty much all you can do. Keep a jug of seafoam or mmo with you during your trip. Safe riding.

      Make sure the tires are good, take a tire patch kit if you have mag wheels, take a tire pump, put some good miles on it before you take the long trip since you've done all that work. Better to fail near home.

        Just put new commander iiis on after the wheel bearing swap.

        Got about 150 miles on them.

      Lube and inspect cable especially clutch cable. Lube shifter pivot points. How recently have you changed transfer case fluid? Fuel filter? Spark plugs? Take along extra fuses and headlamp bulb.. How nea/good is battery and are terminals tight? Lubricate key hoke/ignition and seat latch area.... Is tire alignment and belt tension perfect (after having tires put on I would check carefully......

        I changed transfer case oil about a year ago. Was planning on doing a gear oil change. Snagged new gaskets for both plugs.

        The spark plugs are some ngk iridiums that I replaced two years ago. Figured they'd outlast the bike.

        I checked the fuel filter probably 3 months ago and it was looking good. Replaced it about 18 months ago. I do have a spare though. Bought 2.

        Just cleaned and lubed the seat latch when I put the wiring harness for the horn in. Detail cleaned the entire battery area and below the side covers. Was pretty nasty.

        I think my battery might be going. I've had it for about 2 years daily driving in the AZ sun. Put on about 20k miles. I need to load test it.

        Good call on the alignment and belt tension will check. The alignment is on based on the rear axle marks but I haven't used any tools to verify. Checked belt tension about 4 months ago, that was before I took the belt off though.
