    Starter Symptoms?

Just put a brand new battery on my 2000R*. Still barely turning over. I was getting the clickclickclick. Did the tap with a hammer. Does about a half turn. Grrr...

Check your wire connections, to ground and at the starter, make sure they're good and tight with no dirt, oil, or corrosion. DaveJ here on the site makes a good, upgraded, heavier gauge set of batter/starter cables that helps too.

we have permanent magnet starters. A tap with a hammer is a bad idea with this type starter. Hitting it will most likely either break 1 of the magnets or break it free from where it is bonded to the starter case. If either of these 2 things happen you are pretty much screwed. If it just breaks free from the bonding you may get lucky and find an epoxy that will bond it back to the case. Why not just remove the starter and take it apart clean and inspect the brushes and brush plate? That is probably what it needs. Now you have to remove it to check the magnets.

The R/S starters are easy & inexpensive to rebuild.
        Check out www.mrcycles.com .
they've got wholesale prices on OEM parts.
I rebuilt the starter on my '00 for about $60.00 (10 yrs. ago). Add a set of those fat battery/starter cables & your starter will nearly spin the motor out of the frame.

in the starter where the 12v pos lead goes thru housing, it attaches to a brass U shape brass conductor, that has the wires on ends and brushes on ends of the wires. its called brush holder? The OEM's crack at the 90 degree bends, often fall apart in your hand . I have replaced 2 sets of OEM's on 2 different bikes. one twice. the second time i used an aftermarketbrand that needed a little tweak to fit, despite being advertized to fit.., figuring they had a bad batch of them at Mitsubishi or whatever. if part is cracked you will not get full power to armature. it goes from ok, to failed starts once in a while, then click and maybe, then no start.

oh, and i keep a spare brush holder set in the saddlebag, along with fuel tubing for that day IF my pump dies.
